The Otterbox Commuter Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 offers good security without sacrificing the size or weight of the device (which is the complaint of a lot of people with the Otterbox Defender series). With this case on your BlackBerry Bold 9700 will have decent protection against mid-level drops and scratches. If you want ultimate protection though the best choice would be the Defender series and we’ll review that this week.

The Otterbox Commuter series is made up of two protective layers. The first is the silicon/rubber skin that you put on the handset. Then you insert the phone in a more solid protective frame. It’s fairly easy to get the phone in the case but you might have some trouble getting it out.

As you can see in the photo above, the case does a good job of securing the back of the handset as well as the sides. That back cover can definitely take a beating. There’s an opening at the top though so that the case doesn’t cover the camera of the phone. In the Defender series there’s actually some sort of transparent plastic covering that part as well.

In terms of weight you probably won’t feel the difference too much from the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in the standard leather holster. It’s not as big as the Defender series and you’ll see that in the following photos:

In terms of protection for the front of the phone, the silicon will protect the topmost part as well as the sides. There screen is naked but you can apply your own screen protector to ensure that it doesn’t get scratched.
