BlackBerry App World TVCs

If Apple has the App Store, RIM has the BlackBerry App World. Truthfully told, Apple still runs circles around BlackBerry (or any other OS) when it comes to apps. However it looks like RIM is seriously pushing developers to come do their apps on the BlackBerry platform. They just concluded a developers conference recently in India and they’ve also launched a new TVC promoting the App World. Here are the TVC’s:

RIM announces DevCon Asia January 2011

RIM just sent me a media release through their local PR agency (Virtusio) announcing the first BlackBerry DevCon in Asia. It will be held this coming January 13-14 in Bali, Indonesia. The conference will showcase several keynote presentations, breakout groups, and hands-on training sessions so that developers can learn how to maximize the tools and services available for their apps on the BlackBerry platform.

Why RIM is going for the WebKit Browser for the New BlackBerry 6 Operating System

I e-mailed the local PR agency of RIM here in the Philippines and asked a few questions about the upcoming BlackBerry 6 Operating System, the BlackBerry Bold 9800, and some telco-related queries. They replied pretty quickly but focused mostly on my question on why they’re going with the WebKit browser and what difference will it make for their users. To summarize, RIM believes that the WebKit browser will result to a richer, faster, and more complete browsing experience. It will also be a better platform for developers to make widgets and applications which hopefully means we’ll get more apps. Here’s a video of the browser being demonstrated:

BlackBerry App Developer Challenge

With over $1.5M USD worth in prizes, the third annual BlackBerry App Developer challenge is getting a lot of attention from programmers all over the world. The theme for this year is “Super Apps” which are applications that take advantage of the BlackBerry platform’s unique capabilities. This will also be one of the first regional app development contests. There will be winners from North America, Latin America, Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Asia Pacific (this is where we are). BlackBerry Filipino Inspired Themes

The BlackBerry App World currently offers two free localized themes for Filipinos. This was actually timed for the recent celebration of our independence day last June 12. The first theme is called “Philippines Pride” which uses images of the jeepney, tarsier, and the Philippine eagle. The second one is “Philippines Paradise Island” which has a surfer with a Philippine map inspired sun at the background. Screenshots after the break. Continue reading
